The astrological tradition

The Fourth House: Home, Roots and Family

In astrological tradition the fourth house is the house of home, roots and family, and its cusp is the IC (Imum Coeli, “the bottom of the sky”). It is linked with Cancer and the Moon, and forms an axis with the tenth house. This is a cultural interpretation offered for inspiration, not a scientific fact.

This is astrological tradition — told as cultural heritage and food for thought, for inspiration, not as science.

The fourth house is one of the most personal areas of a birth chart. In astrological tradition it speaks about where we come from: the house we live in, our family, our ancestry and the feeling of being at home. Below we describe what the tradition says, without claiming that planets cause events in anyone's life.

The IC (Imum Coeli, the bottom of the sky)

IC stands for the Latin Imum Coeli, “the bottom of the sky”. Astronomically, it is the point on the ecliptic (the Sun's apparent yearly path across the sky) that lies directly opposite the MC, the midheaven. Picture the celestial meridian, an imaginary line running from south through the zenith to north. The MC is where it meets the ecliptic above us, and the IC is where it meets the ecliptic below the horizon.

In many house systems the IC coincides with the cusp, or starting point, of the fourth house. Its exact position depends on the time and place of birth and on the chosen house system, which is why astrologers value an accurate birth time.

Symbolically, the tradition sees the IC as the foundation of a building or the root system of a tree: unseen from outside, yet carrying everything above. Hellenistic astrologers even gave the fourth place a Greek name meaning roughly “the underground” (Hypogeion).

Themes according to the tradition

Classical astrological texts from the Hellenistic and medieval periods associate the fourth house with several recurring themes:

These are interpretive frameworks. They can suggest questions for reflection: What gives me a sense of security? What do I carry from my family? Where do I feel at home? They are not forecasts about property, family events or health.

Natural sign and house ruler

Modern tradition often speaks of a “natural” sign for each house, matching the houses to the zodiac in order. The fourth house corresponds to Cancer, a water sign ruled by the Moon. That is why imagery of nurturing, shelter, food and the rhythm of the tides appears in readings of this house. See also the Moon in astrology.

This is different from the house ruler in a specific chart. The ruler is the planet that traditionally governs the sign on the cusp of the fourth house. If the cusp falls in Libra, the ruler is Venus; if in Sagittarius, Jupiter. Astrologers look at the sign, house and aspects of that ruler to describe how the theme of home is “told” in that particular chart. More on this idea in the article on ruling planets.

Planets placed inside the fourth house are said by tradition to colour the theme. The Moon there is read as a strong bond with home and the past, Saturn as responsibility or reserve within the family, Venus as a search for beauty and harmony at home. These are symbolic associations, not laws.

The link with the tenth house

The fourth and the tenth house face each other and form one axis, the IC and the MC. Tradition reads them as two sides of one coin:

Symbolically, the IC is the “midnight” of the chart, where the Sun sits at its lowest point below the horizon, while the MC is where we strive to grow. The image is a tree: the deeper the roots, the higher the crown may reach. In many interpretations the question “what nourishes me from within?” goes hand in hand with “what do I show to the world?”.

These axes are read together with the Ascendant and the Descendant, but the IC and MC are especially useful when someone reflects on the balance between home and career. The wider picture is in the article on the houses.

Reading it for inspiration

Astrology is a cultural tradition, not a science. Astronomy can give the exact position of the ecliptic, the meridian and the planets at a given moment, but the meanings of the fourth house come from centuries of interpretive practice. Use them as a mirror for thinking about roots, family and home, not as a basis for decisions about property, health or money. If you are curious about your own chart, start with accurate birth data and see how the fourth house fits into the whole picture.

Which sign and planet are linked with the fourth house?

Tradition pairs the house with Cancer and the Moon as its natural correspondences. The ruler in a specific chart is the planet governing the sign on the cusp, and it may differ.
